The Drug Policy AllianceThe Alliance is the nation's leading organization working to end the war on drugs. They envision new drug policies based on science, compassion, health and human rights and a just society in which the fears, prejudices and punitive prohibitions of today are no more.
Federal Bureau of PrisonsThe Federal Bureau of Prisons was established in 1930 to ensure consistent and centralized administration of the 11 Federal prisons in operation at the time. Today, the Bureau consists of more than 106 institutions, 6 regional offices, a central office (headquarters), 2 staff training centers, and 28 community corrections offices. This is a great website for finding specifics about federal prisons such as locations, visiting hours and procedures, and directions to different federal prisons.
The Harm Reduction
Coalition
The Harm Reduction Coalition (HRC) is committed to reducing drug-related harm among individuals and communities by initiating and promoting local, regional, and national harm reduction education, interventions, and community organizing. HRC fosters alternative models to conventional health and human services and drug treatment; challenges traditional client/provider relationships; and provides resources, educational materials, and support to health professionals and drug users in their communities to address drug-related harm.
Human Rights WatchHRW has conducted specialized prison research and campaigns for prisoners' rights since 1987, to focus international attention on prison conditions worldwide. They believe that a government's claim to respect human rights should be assessed not only by the political freedoms it allows but also by how it treats its prisoners, including those not held for political reasons.
Institute on Domestic Violence in the African American CommunityThe Institute is focused on setting an agenda to reduce/eliminate domestic violence in the African American community.
The Justice Policy InstituteA nonprofit research and public policy organization dedicated to ending society's reliance on incarceration and promoting effective and just solutions to social problems.
Legal Action CenterThe Legal Action Center is the only non-profit law and policy organization in the United States whose sole mission is to fight discrimination against people with histories of addiction, HIV/AIDS, or criminal records, and to advocate for sound public policies in these areas. The National Archive of Criminal Justice Data NACJD preserves and distributes computerized crime and justice data from Federal agencies, state agencies, and investigator-initiated research projects to users for secondary statistical analysis.
The National Center for Victims of CrimeThe National Center for Victims of Crime is the nation's leading resource and advocacy organization for crime victims. Since 1985, they have worked with more than 10,000 grassroots organizations and criminal justice agencies serving millions of crime victims.
National H.I.R.E. NetworkEstablished by the Legal Action Center, the National Helping Individuals with criminal records Re-enter through Employment Network is both a national clearinghouse for information and an advocate for policy change. The goal of the National H.I.R.E. Network is to increase the number and quality of job opportunities available to people with criminal records by changing public policies, employment practices and public opinion. The National H.I.R.E. Network also provides training and technical assistance to agencies working to improve the employment prospects for people with criminal records.
The National Institute of CorrectionsNIC provides training, technical assistance, information services, and policy/program development assistance to federal, state, and local corrections agencies. Services are designed to help corrections professionals meet the challenges of today's corrections environment.
The National Institute of JusticeNIJ is the research, development, and evaluation agency of the U.S. Department of Justice and is dedicated to researching crime control and justice issues. NIJ provides objective, independent, evidence-based knowledge and tools to meet the challenges of crime and justice, particularly at the State and local levels.
The Office on Violence Against WomenThe office has handled the Department of Justice's legal and policy issues regarding violence against women, coordinated departmental efforts, provided national and international leadership, received international visitors interested in learning about the federal government's role in addressing violence against women, and responded to requests for information regarding violence against women.
Reentry BlogFormerly located on the NIC website, the Reentry blog is a daily magazine of transition from prison news, insight and best practices.
The Reentry National Media Outreach Campaign This campaign is designed to support the work of community and faith-based organizations through offering media resources that will facilitate community discussion and decision making about solution-based reentry programs.
The Sentencing Project This organization promotes reduced reliance on incarceration and increased use of more effective and humane alternatives to deal with crime. It is a nationally recognized source of criminal justice policy analysis, data, and program information.
The Urban InstituteA nonpartisan economic and social policy research organization. A focus of their Justice Policy Center (JPC) is to inform the national dialogue on crime, justice, and community safety. An excellent resource for those interested in re-entry at the policy level
The U.S. Justice FundAn advocacy organization that is part of the Open Society Institute, that focuses on securing procedural and substantive justice for all individuals. It attempts to develop criminal and civil justice systems that are accessible and impartial, protect fundamental human rights, prohibit arbitrary and discriminatory government action, and remove barriers that prevent individuals from participating fully in the economic, social and political life of the community.
Safe ReturnThis initiative is a partnership of the Vera Institute of Justice and the Institute on Domestic Violence in the African American Community with support from the Office on Violence Against Women. It addresses domestic violence among African-Americans as prisoners reunite with their families.
The Western Prison Project They coordinate a progressive response to the criminal justice system and build grassroots, multi-racial movements in order to achieve prison reform and reduce the over-reliance on incarceration in the western states.
